- Approximately 65% of US households own at least one pet, which equates to about 65 million homes having a dog or cat.
- On average dog and cat owners spent between $263 and $113, respectively, on veterinary related services in the past 12 months.
- While other industries have had decreased spending from a weak economy during the last decade, pet spending has had a 100% growth. Spending has increased from $17 billion in 1994 to a projected $34.3 billion for 2004.
- Pet dollars were spent in the following categories:
- $14.3 billion for food
- $7.9 billion for supplies and O-T-C medications
- $8.3 billion for veterinarian care
- $1.6 billion for live animal purchases
- $2.2 billion for other services
